So, this man has essentially flushed away $20,000 while he and his kids mooch off of his sister's generosity. I'd say a 30-day eviction notice is a little too sympathetic.

It's pretty clear that this man's behavior has been enabled by his family his entire life. Now that he has big boy responsibilities, he needs to have big boy consequences.

Generous sister gives unemployed 30-year-old brother a 30 day notice to leave her house with his kids after finding out their parents have been giving him $2000 monthly stipend: “[She] gave him nearly a year of free housing”
When I was a kid, I remember that my parents housed one of my cousins for a couple of months. She was already well into adulthood but had fallen upon hard times. I'm not entirely sure what the arrangement was as I was too young to pay attention and was just happy to have a new playmate, but I remember that my parents helped out a lot in her search for a new job and apartment until she got back on her feet. This is the essence of "family helps family."
In our story today, a brother takes advantage of his sister's generosity while he goes through a divorce and unemployment. Instead of making an effort to get back on his feet, he freeloads at his sister's place for ten months. The hay that breaks the camel's back comes when his sister, our protagonist, finds out that he has been recieving two grand a month from their parents the whole time.
